Prof Bidyut Kumar Das completed his MBBS in 1979 and MD (Internal Medicine) in 1984 from SCB Medical College. He was the best graduate of his batch. In the year 1995, he won the Dr PN Berry fellowship and received training in Rheumatology at SGPGI, Lucknow. Subsequently he completed his PhD (Immunology) from Utkal University in 2004. He has been instrumental in establishing the Dept. of Rheumatology at SCB MCH, Cuttack. He is also credited with the use of Telemedicine as a modality of rendering Rheumatology care in Odisha.
He has more than 40 publications in national and international journals. He was research associate, Dept. of Applied Immunology, RMRC, Bhubaneswar, 1994-96. He has done collaborative research with TIFR, Mumbai and ICMR on Immunology of malaria, 2005-2008; with Pasteur Institute, France (IFCIPAR) and TIFR on Immunogenetics, Malaria, 2008-11; with National Institute of Genomics, Kalyani and DST on sepsis, 2013-16 and with ILS, BBSR on Immunology of sepsis 2015-18. He is currently the PI of ICMR funded research on Vitamin D in SLE and the Co-PI of DBT funded multi-institutional research (INSPIRE) on SLE 2018-22
He is a life member of API, IMA, Indian Rheumatology Association, Indian Immunology Society, National Academy of Vector and Vector Borne Diseases, Society for Tropical and Infectious Diseases
He has received numerous awards including Dr MJ Shah award (tropical medicine), 1995 by the API; Best Scientist in Clinical Science, 2011 by the National Academy of Vector Borne Diseases; Samanta Chandrasekhar Award, 2018 by Odisha Bigyan Academy. For his selfless service he has received more than 40 awards and felicitations by various organizations including the ODISHA ICON, 2011 (The Times of India Group), and the ODISHA CITIZEN’S AWARD (OTV, Odisha).
